What does it take to
learn to play the piano? |
|
The following short
article can be seen as a
generalized set of
guidelines for the beginning
pianist in the quest of
learning how to play the
piano.The long term view
For the novice, the thrill
of fooling around at the
piano will soon wear thin as
he or she becomes aware of
the obstacles. At that point
it is necessary to decide
how one should proceed and
what ones goals and
objectives are. What parents
should understand is that
their ongoing support,
enthusiasm and participation
for with their childs
processes is utterly
essential. Studies show that
almost all musical prodigies
have had unlimited support
and commitment from their
parents that worked hand in
hand with their
extraordinary achievement.
The elderly beginner should
forget about performance and
simply realize that there is
no other activity other than
walking, breathing, sleeping
and eating well that will be
as therapeutically
beneficial for their body,
mind and soul. Playing the
piano is a good therapy for
arthritis and, boredom and
mental deterioration.
Reading skills, hand eye
coordination, spatial
thinking, achievement of
goals and expression of
inner sensibilities are just
a few examples that regular
practice and playing can
result.
A set of clear objectives is
essential for all levels of
musician. Planning and
constructive self
evaluation is necessary even
if one is taking lessons or
receiving a qualified
opinion or guidance from a
teacher, on an
ongoing basis.
It may sound like a no
brainer but musical
proficiency is linked to
listening to music (music
appreciation) and the
ability mentally to hear
music after the fact. To be able to hear
music in ones minds eye is
essential. Musical thinking
is equivalent to the
ordinary ability to
rationalize, without which
we would not be able to
contemplate, conceive or
accomplish anything.
To sum up this short
thumbnail on the beginning
requirements of learning the
piano, at whichever level
you are in music study
and practice, you should
listen as much as possible to quality music. If you
hear this music going
through your mind over and
over again after the fact,
be grateful. That is your
musical memory. Your brain
is working hard to process
what you have heard or have
played. What you do with
this memory will be at the
core of your future accomplishment
